School Health Advisory Council (SHAC)
The Mart ISD School Health Advisory Council is a school board appointed advisory group of individuals who represent different segments of the community. It is made up of parents, community members, and school staff working together to improve the health of all students and families through coordinated school health programs. Research shows that healthy children do better in school – from attendance and behavior to academics and overall performance. The Mart SHAC works with the district to support good health and academic achievement.
Creating an environment which fosters achievement
Mart ISD, in partnership with the home and community, is dedicated to providing every student a quality education in a safe environment.
Why do we need a SHAC?
It’s Texas law. The 77th session of the Texas Legislature, Senate Bill 19, mandated every school district in Texas to create a local district School Health Advisory Council.
The SHAC meets four times a year.
Future dates are February 8, 2017 & April 5, 2017. The meetings will start at 7:20 am in the Mart Elementary School Conference Room.
Elementary school students participate in at least 30 min./day or 135 min./week of physical activity.
The district has adopted and enforces policies regarding vending machine compliance and food service guidelines. It has also adopted and enforces policies and procedures regarding penalties for the use of tobacco products on school campuses or at school-sponsored/related activities.
Benefits of Having a SHAC
Every independent school system is required by law to have a School District Health Advisory Council; of which the majority of members must be parents who are not employed by the school district. Title 2, Chapter 28, Section 28.004 of the Texas Education Code at http://www.statutes.legis.state.tx.us/Docs/ED/htm/ED.28.htm#28.004p details the specifics of this mandate.

SHAC Guide for Texas School Districts (#E05-12431)
The School Health Program of the Department of State Health Services produced this helpful School Health Advisory Councils Guide for Texas School Districts for help to get started while building a successful SHAC. The guide has been updated with the most current information available in support of efforts to provide school health education and services through the district’s SHAC.
To find out if your school district has a SHAC, who is in charge and how you can be involved or get more information, contact the district’s administrative office and schedule a time to meet with the staff person that has oversight for the SHAC.
